Collaborating for an active city
Active communities are built by strong partnerships. Hamilton's Active Communities Strategy was developed in 2009. It has identified three priorities for the future - Inspiring Motivation, Enabling Participation and Working Smarter - and provides a foundation for agencies involved in sport and recreation to collaborate on important decision making and agree on a set of priorities.
The strategy responds to the need for improvement in the delivery of sport and recreation in Hamilton and establishes a structure that maximises the opportunity for ongoing partnership between sector and government organisations. The benefits of this will flow through to all individuals, families and organisations providing opportunities for active living.
The signatories to this strategy are committed to work collaboratively to achieve the priorities identified for the city. |

Inspiring Motivation
Hamilton recognises the importance of the growing need to be active and healthy and inspiring people to be active. We have the opportunities, now we need to encourage the community to get involved and to have fun. Whether it is throwing a frisbee in the backyard with family, kicking a ball around at the local park with friends using jerseys as goals, or taking an evening walk with your neighbours, being active is the backbone to our own health and well-being, and is the pulse to our city.
Our people are energised to be active. As a city, we commit to changing hearts and minds, so that ..
- We all understand the life-long benefits of being active and living a healthy lifestyle
- Being active is viewed as a way of life and people see opportunities for activity everywhere
- Activity starts at home through play, with fun family-friendly opportunities and neighbourhood activities widely promoted and supported
- Our sport and recreational successes and role models inspire people to get active

Enabling Participation
There is a wide range of opportunities to participate in sport and recreation in our city.
Hamilton has 5.09ha of managed open space per/1000 population, the second highest in New Zealand, and our outdoor environment and natural assets support physical activity. The city also provides numerous and diverse range of events that are delivered by various organisations in our city with the aim of getting people healthy and active.
Hamilton has a range of sport and recreational opportunities. We reduce the barriers to being fit and healthy, so that ..
- Opportunities to be active are well-communicated and coordinated, for all sectors of our community
- The sport and recreation needs of our community are recognised and provided for now and as the city grows
- We ensure a range of low cost/no cost opportunities that enhance our way of life
- Ensuring our cycleways, footpaths and recreational spaces are well connected and people feel safe
- Encouraging new and emerging sports and recreation whilst harnessing the strength of traditional sport models.

Working Smarter
To create a culture that embraces and enables formal and informal sport we need to focus on grass-roots community participation and volunteerism in sport to build leadership capacity and utilise our local expertise. In other words, 'work smarter.'
Hamilton's natural assets and open spaces provide an inviting platform for getting active. These, combined with the potential of our programmes, facilities and people, are the city's greatest assets. These are maximised through:
- Making bold decisions that ensure Hamilton's active community offer is sustainable
- Actively influencing opportunities for innovation and collaboration around funding, resources and local expertise
- Ensuring our facilities, programmes, clubs and events are well coordinated
- Valuing all our volunteers and coaches as key assets
- Growing an active network that stimulates leadership and collaboration.
