There is a lot of great things being achieved by Council staff out and about around the city - you will see activity on many city streets. However, this edition is dedicated to initiatives we have put in place to support our staff in achieving their work goals.
If you’re considering working for Hamilton City Council in the future, this information will help you understand how we are creating an organisation that is committed to quality customer service and thereby striving to be “the best” service organisation in NZ.
Go Beyond
A new shared identity was launched in February that describes our staff aspirations to Go Beyond. Driven by our mission to ‘be recognised as NZ’s leading service organisation by delivering a distinctively Hamilton customer experience’, the new shared identity and qualities provide the basis for Council staff to deliver on our mission.
Go Beyond is internally focused (that is, focused on staff within the organisation rather than the public side of Council) and has been developed to underpin how we go about our work to achieve the goals for the community.

People Framework It’s our desire to have a highly motivated and skilled work force able to fulfil our agreed goals. To achieve this, we have launched a People Framework that is structured to recognise the diversity of our organisation through the grouping of roles into job families based on similarities in the focus of the roles and the competencies required.
This Framework has been designed to support our people related processes around recruitment, induction, performance reviews, training and development, career and succession planning.
Our position descriptions have been updated to include the People Framework competencies and Go Beyond qualities that we’re looking for in the roles we advertise. You will also see a new look to our adverts on websites, such as Seek, conveying the message of shaping our city through smart thinking. This way, we can attract future employees with the drive that we’re looking for in our staff.
Customer service delivery
Driven by our desire to be “the best” service organisation in NZ, we are developing our promise to our customers about the service we deliver. This is still a work in progress, but, watch this space...
Safety and Wellbeing Charter
Using our Go Beyond aspirations to support our health, safety initiatives, we have launched a Safety and Wellbeing Charter to ensure we have ‘healthy people in a safe and productive workplace’.
This 3-year charter provides the focus for the organisation through identification of objectives, actions, policies and procedures that ensure competencies within our business exceed our statutory requirements around health and safety, and ensure Council is a safe workplace with safe work practices for staff and contractors.
Leadership Week
From leadership presentations from our CEO and Teresa Gattung to topics on Military Leadership, Authentic Leadership and Leadership and Engagement, Council staff celebrated Leadership Week (25 June to 2 July) with the opportunity to learn from leaders across industry. The nationwide week organised through the Sir Peter Blake Trust is intended to challenge our thinking and enhance our knowledge about leadership. Our week was topped off with Red Socks Day on 2 July.
