Ruakura Road upgrade perspective

Project Description

Ruakura Road is a key arterial route in the east of the city providing an important link from the city to Waikato University and the Hillcrest area. Council is beginning the process of upgrading Ruakura Road/Peachgrove Road and Te Aroha Street intersection to improve safety and better cater for current and future traffic volumes as well as buses, cyclists and pedestrians in the area.

Part of the process involves designating some land the around intersection – most of which is Council owned. Designating the land sets it aside to be used for the associated road widening and intersection upgrade.

Access Hamilton

As Hamilton continues to grow so does the traffic on our roads. Access Hamilton aims to improve access around the city by managing traffic congestion, travel times, safety, parking and convenience. Access Hamilton also aims to ensure that there are good networks for all travellers, whether they use cars, public transport, walk or cycle.

Through the city’s Access Hamilton strategy Council is doing much to address traffic growth with action plans to enable good access and movement around the city for all modes of transport, improved safety and sustainability for the future. A significant Access Hamilton project is the eastern section of Wairere Drive that will extend from Tramway Road/Gordonton Road through to Cambridge Road and ultimately Cobham Drive. Ruakura Road will be a key connection into this part of the city’s arterial ring road network.

Key features of project

The proposed upgrade involves (see concept plan for visual diagrams of these features):

  • widened road carriageway allowing for two lanes of traffic in each direction on RuakuraRoad plus a central painted median strip to allow safer right turns for vehicles into and out of properties
  • cycle lanes on both sides of the road
  • pedestrian refuge islands at key locations to improve pedestrian safety across the road (2 by Hilda Ross)
  • new bus stops on either side of Ruakura Road (by Hilda Ross)
  • new footpaths that will link to existing footpaths on Peachgrove Road
  • landscaping/urban design features at various locations including on the corners of the upgraded Ruakura Road/Peachgrove Road/Te Aroha Street intersection
  • provision of dedicated right turn lanes in all directions at the Ruakura Road/Peachgrove Road/Te Aroha Street intersection, as well as a give way controlled left turn lane from Ruakura Road into Peachgrove Road, Peachgrove Road into Ruakura Road, and Peachgrove Road into Te Aroha Street.

Time period

The proposed timing of constructing of the upgrade is likely to be in 2-4 years time and may well be undertaken at the same time as the construction of the Wairere Drive extension.

Project Progress

Open days about the Ruakura Road intersection upgrade project were held at the Hilda Ross centre for residents and the public and the Waikato Centre for Continuing Education on 18 November.
