We take our position as a leader in our city seriously, so we actively participate in and promote initiatives and activities that support environmentally sustainable achievements. And as a large employer in the city we also have our own organisational education and awareness programme within Hamilton City Council to help ensure we have an environmentally conscious workforce.
Here are a few activities our staff are involved in for the city: |

Bike Wise Council staff put their pedals to the metal throughout February as part of the national Bike Wise month. Activities included “Go By Bike Day” where everyone was encouraged to ditch vehicular transport for bike transport instead. Around 200 Hamiltonians participated and were rewarded with a free breakfast in Garden Place, and a number joined Deputy Mayor Pippa Mahood on her ‘Mayoral Challenge’. |

eWaste Day Council is walking the talk on waste minimisation. Electronic waste (eWaste) can seriously harm the environment, wildlife and human health when dumped in landfills. eDay is a simple, free and effective way to dispose of household computer waste and old mobile phones in an environmentally sustainable way.
In 2007, 6900 carloads across twelve regions dropped off 425 tonnes of eWaste. 42 tonnes of this was collected in Hamilton. In 2008 the service was even more popular with 90 tonnes of eWaste being diverted from landfill from over 900 cars in Hamilton alone. Council staff were among the 100’s of volunteers working across the region on eDay to coordinate the disposal of the eWaste from residents.

Walking School Bus A walking school bus is a group of children who walk to and from school supervised by adults. Like a real bus, it travels at a set time and children join or leave the bus at designated stops. This programme is in place in a number of Hamilton primary schools and is growing from strength to strength as more families choose to walk to and from school together. As well as enjoying the benefits of exercise and companionship, it is a great saving on time and money. |

Environmental Sustainability Strategy
Hamilton’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy is the culmination of eight months of collaborative working between 10 Hamilton based agencies to develop a shared vision for the city's environment. It spells out the changes we need to make to create a sustainable Hamilton. However, success depends on the cumulative effect of those changes – from each of us as individuals right up to the big institutions and investors who will shape the city's environment.
The strategies principles are set out in four key themes areas; mobilised and responsive communities, environmentally sensitive urban growth, healthy ecosystems and resource conservation. A series of flagship projects have been identified that will help us shape that change over the next 5 years in a positive way. We have a shared responsibility for making it work.
