Horsham Downs Road upgrade

Project Description

Horsham Downs Road is a minor arterial of importance in the north-east of the city and is a key feeder to Hamilton’s arterial ring road system. Council is in the process of finalising plans for the proposed upgrade of Horsham Downs Road from the existing kerb and channel (just north of the Thomas Road shops) to just beyond North Ridge Drive.

The upgrade of this section of Horsham Downs Road to urban standards will provide for vehicle traffic, cycling and walking facilities and a safer environment.

The urban upgrade involves:

  • Extension of 50kph urban speed limit to south of Borman Road and includes North Ridge Drive
  • Widened road carriageway
  • Installation of kerb and channel
  • Construction of a retaining wall on the eastern side of Horsham Downs Road. A pedestrian safety fence will be installed on top of this wall
  • New concrete footpaths linking to the existing footpaths on Horsham Downs Road
  • Pedestrian refuge islands at key locations to improve pedestrian safety across the road
  • Tactile pads to be installed to assist visually impaired pedestrians at the crossing points
  • Installation of street lighting
  • Landscaping will be undertaken at various locations
  • Installation of underground water and stormwater pipe lines
  • The final road surfacing will be chipseal (consistent with the existing surface) and a central painted flush median to enable safer right turns for vehicles at intersections and into properties
  • Provision for parking on the western side of Horsham Downs Road. No Stopping lines will be marked for visibility reasons at intersections and on the eastern side of Horsham Downs Road to enable the provision of cycle facilities
  • Provision for cycle lanes on both sides of the road
  • Lowering and regrading of the crest of Horsham Downs Road at the intersection of North Ridge Drive. This will improve the visibility and safety at the intersection
  • In conjunction with the project the existing overhead power lines are currently being replaced with underground cabling enhancing the visual appeal and landscape (from Moonlight Drive to Borman Road) in partnership with WEL Networks.

Hamilton is continuing to grow – particularly in the north – as is the amount of traffic on our roads. Projections show that this will be the trend for the foreseeable future. Council is doing much to address this traffic growth to enable good access and movement around the city for all modes of transport and to ensure the city's transport network can be sustainable for the future.
