Role profile - Leisure

Leisure at Council

Most cities provide a variety of leisure facilities for their residents and visitors to enjoy and they contribute to the positive image the city has, but they're not often totally run by a local authority.

At Hamilton City Council we are responsible for providing and managing leisure facilities in the form of the Hamilton Zoo, Waterworld and Gallagher Aquatic Centre.

Each location is unique and the services provided diverse and challenging.

Leisure diversity

What could be more different than being one of our staff and being a Zookeeper, Gym Instructor or a Lifeguard? These aren't your traditional Council roles, but each one is critical to the success of these facilities and our city.

There are many and varied roles available but a few include:

Lifeguard or Pool Attendant

Actively supervise the aquatic activities of customers at our facilities that promotes and ensures safe and enjoyable environment for everyone.

Learn to Swim Teacher

Teach all facets of swimming and water safety to babies, children and adults to develop their confidence and abilities in an aquatic environment.

Gym Instructor

Your enthusiasm for health and fitness will help our members achieve their goals in a safe, professional and friendly workout environment.

Facilities Manager

Manage the operational aspects of the facility including financial, facilities and staff management to achieve the operational objectives within the centre as well as customer satisfaction.

Zookeeper

Be responsible for the animal welfare and care to ensure they are safe and content in their environment.

Zoo Educator

Zoo Hosts and Volunteers

Conduct guided tours and provide information to visitor groups to assist with better understanding of animals and their environment.

Leisure challenges

As well as the technical aspects to ensure our facilities are in top condition for our residents and visitors to enjoy, our teams at these locations must ensure they provide exemplary customer services from the time the sites open to the time they close each day.

So, even if you're a great swimmer or love animals, you must also love interacting with people as well because that's a critical part of what you'll be doing every day.

Each day will be different as you'll be faced with different visitor groups and situations that need to be coordinated and managed in a professional and effective way. One moment it might be a school visit, swimming club meet or learn to swim sessions and the next it might be a guided tour for the young and not so young, an animal education session or a corporate group functions.

Additionally you might need to deal with facility upgrades or service outages (planned or unplanned), health and safety situations, peak pressure times such as hot summer days when everyone wants to use the facilities, unwell animals, staff rosters and budget management.
