Walking school bus resources

Incentives & Rewards

Students who walk on the bus display a ticket on the outside of their school bag. Tickets are clipped to show how many times they have participated in a walk to/from school. Students are rewarded for their commitment to walking in a number of ways. Some schools award coloured zip pulls to wear on the outside of a school bag; some schools put the completed tickets into a draw for a goodie bag once a term; some schools print certificates. Tickets and zip pulls are designed to reflect positive messages relating to health and the environment. This means that schools can use these in conjunction with other programmes such as EnviroSchools and Active Schools.

Support

Adult volunteers are the key to the success of the programme. Without their dedication and energy, student groups of all ages would not be able to enjoy such a fun and safe walk to school on the bus. We work closely with route coordinators and their teams of volunteers to strengthen each walking school bus. Each route is fully supported with the resources needed to operate safely such as high visibility vests, first aid kits, whistles etc. To acknowledge how special and generous these community figures are, we have secured monthly ‘treats’ from local business and award different volunteers each time.

News and ideas are shared and circulated in our monthly newsletter ‘The Journey’ and we bring everyone together once a term for morning tea celebrations.    Maps of each walking school bus route are produced and these are a great way of promoting the idea to new families and visitors to the school.
