Role profile - Engineering

Engineering at Council

CityHeart concept

Engineering at Hamilton City Council is varied and diverse and gives you the opportunity to experience a broad range of engineering aspects that you may not necessarily be exposed to if you worked elsewhere.

Because the responsibilities we have for the city are varied and diverse, the projects we work on and the types of engineers we employ to carry out this work is equally diverse.

Engineering is one of our 'hard to recruit' roles.  We are a rapidly growing city and need engineers to design and manage our projects, but unfortunately there is a world-wide shortage of skilled engineers at present.

Engineering diversity

Enabling new ways of thinking

Roading and transportation engineers

Be involved in developing and designing new, improved and safer transportation networks across our city so our residents, business operators and visitors can commute easily and safely from place to place. Optimising transportation networks to allow sustainable and alternative transport modes, including cycling and walking networks and public transport services, which ensure commuter safety, are critical aspects to this role.

Utilities engineers

Provide future-proof infrastructure services for water supply, storm water management and waste water services for a rapidly growing city, whilst maintaining day to day services for residents, businesses and visitors.

Environmental engineers

Ensure our services are provided in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.  If the environment is important to you and you enjoy a challenge every day, this could be the career choice for you.

Urban design engineers

Influence the overall look and feel of our physical surrounds through the use of urban design aspects into our day to day engineering projects.

Engineering challenges

Vista cycling

The projects our engineering teams are involved in range from minor traffic safety works to new infrastructure networks for roading and water services for new subdivisions; scheduled renewals to existing services and upgrades to plants required to meet city growth.

Our engineering teams are also key players in bringing the V8 Supercars to our city and the CityHeart revitalisation project.

Engineering opportunities

Each year, depending on our need, we offer scholarships and cadetships in engineering to students who are studying in these disciplines.

Cadetships

These are designed for students who are part way through studying a Diploma level qualification in Civil Engineering - ideally you'll already been enrolled in the Diploma and will have completed at least your first year of study.

The cadetship offers you a planned rotation that sees you complete your Diploma while working for us.  You will get to see how the city gets ready for the V8’s or upgrades its multi million dollar Water & Wastewater plants, as well as day to day operational aspects of civil engineering. We will pair you up with experienced engineers who can help develop your expertise.

Cool Job + Fees Paid + Variety = Council's Civil Engineer Cadetship

Scholarships

Our scholarships are aimed at students studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil).  You will have completed the first two years of your degree and be raring to go for the final two years.    As the study programme for the degree is different to the Diploma qualification, the scholarship programme is also structured differently, but you still get the same outcome - broad experience, diverse projects, great mentors and a cool job at the end of it.

Fees Paid + Summer Work Experience + Cool Job + Variety = Council's Civil Engineer Scholarship

Hamilton City Council cadetships and scholarships include:

  • Payment of course fees for an approved programme within the Civil Engineering Diploma;
  • Paid employment with Council during the summer vacation period;
  • The provision of relevant work, and appropriate supervision, during the periods of paid work;
  • The provision of employment with Council at the completion of the qualification.

They are intended to support the completion of qualifications for students who are studying in the Civil Engineering discipline and to provide the recipient with employment on completion.
