Wairere Drive 4 Laning Overall Concept

Access Hamilton

Wairere Drive 4-Laning is an Access Hamilton project.  Access Hamilton aims to improve access around the city by managing traffic congestion, travel times, safety, parking and convenience.  Access Hamilton also aims to ensure that there are good networks for all travellers, whether they use cars, public transport, walk or cycle.

Wairere Drive 4-laning is a key roading project that will address current traffic congestion and future city growth, including arterial intersection improvements and completion of the ring road and cross-city connector. Pedestrian and cycle provision over the whole corridor will be maintained, or enhanced in a design that optimises network capacity and safety.

Project Background

The Wairere Drive 4-Laning (Pukete Road to Resolution Drive) project expands the section of two lane road to four lanes, including intersection improvements and the addition of a clip-on pedestrian and cyclist facility to the existing Pukete Bridge.  Wairere Drive forms part of the greater Wairere Drive corridor, which in the long-term is planned to stretch from Te Rapa Road (SH1) in the west to Cobham Drive (SH1) in the south.

The design takes into account the underlying cultural, ecology and landscape features providing a pleasing visual link between Wairere Drive and the Waikato River.

Wairere Drive is a key component of Hamilton’s arterial ring road and is a strategic corridor of regional significance. Council has made a commitment through Access Hamilton to address the city’s transportation issues including the city’s increasing traffic congestion and population growth.

The 4-laning project involves widening and improvement of the 2.1km section of Wairere Drive (Pukete Road to Resolution Drive) from two lanes to four lanes. It will include signalised intersection improvements at Pukete Road and River Road and the addition of a clip-on pedestrian and cyclist facility to the existing Pukete Bridge.

Project Update

February 2012

Progress on the Wairere Drive 4-Laning site has been steady since the Christmas break, with plenty of work now to be completed during the summer construction season.

Work has been continuing on site lately with:

  • Final shaping of the new road swale drains and bundsContinuation of new road pavement construction
  • Continuation of new road pavement construction
  • Continuation of changing the Pukete Road/Wairere Drive roundabout to a signalisaed intersection
  • Completion of the new Ashley Street retaining wall (next to Pukete Bridge)
  • Construction of scaffolding for the next section of installation of the new bridge pedestrian/cycle clip-on structure

Over the next month, work is scheduled toproceed wtih:

  • Further works at the Pukete Road/Wairere Drive intersection
  • Further pavement construction of the new Wairere Drive road
  • Completion of footpath reconstruction around the Pukete Underpass extensions
  • Continuation of Pukete Bridge drilling works

Please be aware that both works at the intersection of Pukete Road/Wairere Drive and across the Pukete Bridge will require additional traffic management which may cause minor disruption at times and we thank you for your patience in regards to these works.

Construction works are still programmed to be completed between Pukete Road and River Road (including the Pukete Bridge widening) by mid-2012.

Special Note

Please be aware that the construction site could be hazardous to public with machinery working and excavations underway.  For safety reasons, please do not enter the construction site.
