Role

Council exists to enable democratic local decision-making by and on behalf of communities and the promotion of the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Hamilton communities, both present and future. This includes setting Hamilton's long-term direction and ensuring that Council acts in the best interests of the community.

Council's responsibilities cover a wide range of facilities, activities and services from providing children's playground equipment through to treating the city's water and wastewater. Meeting the community's priorities is fundamental to Council's overall responsibilities, activities and service delivery. Partnership and consultation with the community is an integral part of Council's overall core functions.

Fields of Activity

• Developing and approving Council policy and strategy
• Determining the expenditure and funding requirements of Council through the Long-Term Plan and Annual Plan processes
• Monitoring the performance of Council against its stated objectives and policies (in particular through the Annual Report)
• Law-making (bylaws) and overseeing that the relevant Acts of Parliament (e.g., the Local Government Act 2002) are complied with
• Employing and monitoring the performance of the Chief Executive
