Advanced Stop Boxes
To make the roads safer for cyclists, advanced stop boxes have been introduced at most Hamilton intersections with traffic lights. By moving into a cyclists' area at the front of the traffic queue, cyclists get a head start when lights turn from red to green. Advanced stop boxes will only work safely and effectively if road users use them properly.

Cycle Lanes
The use of segregated cycle facilities such as cycle lanes, provide safety for cycling. On road bicycle facilities generally take the form of:
- Dedicated bicycle lanes marked with cycle symbols and green surfacing.
- Quiet local streets where traffic volumes are low or slowed (speed humps, traffic islands etc).
Off road bicycle facilities typically take the form of shared paths for use by both cyclists and pedestrians. These are specifically widened for user’s safety. Cyclists need to take care and slow down when using these facilities.

Hook Turns
Turning right at intersections can be tricky for cyclists. Hook turns are the safest way for cyclists to turn right at intersections. They allow cyclists to turn right at an intersection in two stages, during two green light phases.
