Controlling your dog

Dog under control

Dogs must be kept under control at all times. This includes on the dog owner's own property. Owners have a responsibility to ensure that their dog is under direct control of a person or that the dog is confined within the land or premises.

In any public place, including parks, dogs must be on a lead. The only exceptions are parks designated as dog exercise areas. The owner must remain on the park while the dog is being exercised, have continuous control of the dog, and collect any faeces from their dog immediately and dispose of it in a legal manner.

Offence free

Hamilton City Council encourages responsible dog ownership by rewarding owners who have demonstrated continuous control of their dog for the preceding 24-month period, by acknowledging no substantiated complaints, infringement notices, or prosecutions.

Only owners who have been offence free are eligible for Category One registration.
