The fees for dog registration fall into three categories:

Fee Categories

 

Category one - Minimum Fee

·         No substantiated complaint(s), no impoundings, no infringement notices, be prosecution and offence free for a 24 month period; and

·         Meet your legal requirements to register your dog; and

·         fulfil ONE of the THREE following requirements:

1.    De-sexed dog, certificate required;

2.    Owner passes the ‘Dog Owners Education Test’;

3.    Completion of a 10 week approved obedience course, certificate required.

 

Category two - Medium Fee

Dog owner needs to fulfil TWO out of the THREE following requirements:

1.    De-sexed dog, certificate required;

2.    Owner passes the ‘Dog Owners Education Test’;

3.    Completion of a 10 week approved obedience course, certificate required

Category three - Full Fee

Dog owner does not fulfil the requirements to qualify for either Category One or Category Two.

Prompt Payment Discount

This $16.00 discount is for renewal accounts. To receive the prompt payment discount, the renewal fee must be paid before 30 June each year. The following table shows fee payment dates and the discounted, standard and penalised fees:

New Registration


If the dog is less than 3 months old or the dog is imported into NZ and the dog is first required to be registered after 1 August in any registration year, the fee shall be 1/12th of the annual fee for each complete month remaining in the registration year after the date of such registration.

Puppy Registration

A puppy needs to be registered on or before the age of 3 months.  Any dog registered for the first time on or after 1 July 2006 must be implanted with a microchip.

 

Permit Fee for owning More than 2 Dogs

If you own more than two dogs a permit is required. An initial fee of $70 is payable with a $35 renewal fee annually.

Guide Dogs, Companion and Hearing Dogs

For certified seeing eye and hearing ear dogs, a registration must still be completed, however there is no charge.

 

Meanacing and Dangerous Dogs

Owners making application to register their dog are required by law to inform Council if:

a)   The dog has been classified as menacing under Section 33A or Section 33C of the Act and the reasons for the classification.

b)   The dog has been classified as a dangerous dog under Section 31 of the Act.
