Fees and policies

A minimal adoption fee applies to all adopted dogs. In addition, fees will apply for the following:

Desexing

All adopted dogs from the AC&C Centre must be desexed. The desexing fee is paid by the new dog owner to Hamilton City Council who in turn pays the vet for their services.

Dogs old enough to be desexed will be transported to the vet clinic from the Animal Care and Control Centre on the morning of the operation. The new owner is responsible for collecting the dog later in the afternoon. All fees must be paid before the dog goes to the vet clinic.

If you wish to use your own vet, please pre-pay the desexing and bring the receipt into us as proof of payment. We will confirm with your vet that the desexing has occurred and update our records.

Registration

All adopted dogs including puppies must be registered before they leave the Animal Care and Control Centre. This fee will be advised when you apply.

If you live outside Hamilton City you have two options

  1. Register the new dog with your Council and allow us to see the tag and receipt before the dog is released. Or;
  2. Register your dog with us and then exchange the Hamilton tag for your own Council's tag (at no cost).

Vaccination

A vaccination fee applies to all puppies under six months old. Dogs over the age of six months may be vaccinated on request.

All puppies and dogs vaccinated are held at the Animal Care and Control Centre for 10 days following the vaccination, to ensure the vaccination is successful.

Property inspection

During the application process, a Dog Control Officer will be checking that there is a fenced area on your property to contain the dog. The fencing must be a permanent structure and be suitable to contain the dog.  If you have existing fencing, you have one week to bring it up to standard.

The size of the section and the size of the dog will be considered to ensure there is enough room for the dog to play and exercise.

If the property inspection fails, the adoption process may finish at this time.

Dog owner education test

You must complete this test during the application process. The twenty multiple choice questions ensure you have some basic knowledge of your responsibilities and obligations as a dog owner. A pass rate of 16/20 is required.
