Outside the new Water Treatment Station upgrade |
Hamilton water is 'A-a' graded by Ministry of Health and is a quality assured supply.
Although the water is treated at the Hamilton Water Treatment Station (WTS), there are always very fine sediments that remain in the water. These sediments do settle and accumulate over time. With sudden increases in water velocity or reversal of flow direction due to network operations or demand, e.g., during and after public holiday period, these accumulated sediments can become suspended and 'discoloured water' occurs. This is a risk associated with all water supplies. Despite the occasional brown water, the water is safe to drink and complies with the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards.
Council has engaged external experts over the last two years and is continuing to look at solutions and strategies to reduce these incidences. The action Council has implemented, in short-term, is to increase flushing frequencies. This has reduced number of incidents . The planned flushing programme is managed in such manner that residents and businesses are informed no less than 24 hours prior the flushing activities. The notice card we use includes advice for residents and businesses around flushing time. As a long-term solution, Council is further upgrading the WTS, which will reduce the fine sediments entering into in our network.
The nature of discoloured water is such that the risk can never be eliminated.
If the you requires more than the normal supply for what ever reasons, it is wise to provide such additional safeguards privately. |
