Celebrity competitors battled wills and limbs on different forms of transport in the Commuter Challenge. The purpose of this event was to highlight the benefits of making trips during peak hour traffic on alternative forms of transport to the car. The results speak for themselves with the bicycle reigning supreme.

On the 7.9km commute from Chartwell:

  • CEO Michael Redman, on a Council fleet bike took first place in just 19.28mins
  • Justin Nelson (Rural Bachelor of the Year 2004) on a bus came a close second in a time of 20.44mins
  • Former Silver Fern Jenny May Coffin in the Classic Hits vehicle took 24.00mins (plus $9 for a days parking)

On the 1.8km suburban crawl from Steele Park:

  • Bryce Johns (Former Waikato Times editor) arrived first on a bike in just 8.27mins!!
  • Paula Southgate, Environment Waikato Councillor, arrived in an outrigger canoe (on the river) in 12.33mins
  • Hamilton City Council Councillor Dave Macpherson was third in a borrowed Honda hybrid car in a time of 15.34mins (plus $4 all day parking)
  • Max Weinberg, from Sport Waikato, walked the distance in 18.12mins.
