Ashes burial and memorial options

Memorial Walk

Book of Remembrance

Families have the choice as to whether or not they wish to be present for an ash burial. Should they decide not to attend, arrangements can be made for a Hamilton Park Cemetery staff member to inter the ashes in the absence of the family.

If a family wish to inter the ashes of a loved one, they need to make a booking with the cemetery office at least 24 hours in advance. On the day, the assigned plot will be prepared (dug) and dressed by cemetery staff prior to family's arrival. Flower vases will be provided and alongside the plot will be containers of soil for the family to use to cover the ashes after the interment if they wish.

No staff will attend unless specifically requested by prior arrangement.

Following the interment and departure of family the plot and surrounding garden will be reinstated by staff.

If a family wish to have ashes interred, but not attend, they can arrange this either directly with cemetery staff or through a funeral director. Family may request the date on which the ashes are to be interred on their behalf and cemetery staff will inter the ashes on that date, provided it is not a Sunday or a public holiday.

Please refer to the brochure relating the appropriate ash interment areas, listed below, for details on plot management, including items that are not permitted to remain on the plot.

The last booking time for ash interments, Monday to Saturday, is 3.30pm.
Any interment outside of these hours will need prior approval from cemetery management and will incur an after hours fee.
Where possible bookings should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Please contact a funeral director or the Hamilton Park Cemetery office to discuss booking times.

    Memorial Walk Ash Interment

The Memorial Walk, located directly opposite our Chapel, is a formal walkway through flower gardens with a central fountain feature.

All plots along this walkway provide for the interment of up to two sets of ashes, which are placed in the garden directly behind the single plaque placed on the concrete berm or the fountain surround.

Fresh flowers only are permitted in the gardens and are placed in containers provided by the cemetery.

Ashes may be interred under designated trees within the Garden of Memories. As no memorial is permitted under the trees there are several other options for memorials for these interments. See Plaque Only options below.

Ash Spread - Garden of Memories

The Sunken Garden area within the Garden of Memories provides a secluded place surrounded by trees and gardens where ashes are spread. Memorialisation for this option can take place with the Plaque Only options provided.

    Plaque Only Memorialisation

The Plaque Only options provide for the memorialisation on a wall, a berm or in an outdoor book, for ashes that have been spread either in the cemetery or elsewhere, or have been interred under one of the designated trees in the Garden of Memories where memorialisation at the interment site is not permitted.

The granite, bronze or porcelain plaques are ordered by family directly with a manufacturer.

  • Sunken Garden Memorial Wall - Porcelain plaques are placed on the brick wall of the Sunken Garden. These spots cannot be reserved in advance as plaques are automatically installed on the next available spot.
  • Plaque only Berm - Granite or Bronze plaques are placed on the concrete berm surrounding the Sunken Garden on plots reserved by family or friends.
  • Book of Memories - Laminate plaques are placed within this metal outdoor book based on the first letter of the deceased's family name. These plaques are ordered through Hamilton Park Cemetery office. The inscription is limited to 70 letters.
  • To order a Book of Memories plaque please download the form and once completed, send with payment to the cemetery office. See Fees and Charges list for current prices.

    The Book of Remembrance

For those deceased persons cremated at Hamilton Park Cemetery, the beautifully crafted leather-bound Book of Remembrance provides family and friends with another option to memorialise their loved ones. Entries are made only when requested and are hand written in stylised calligraphy.

The book is displayed in a viewing window at the administration office and pages are turned daily to display the names inscribed on the related day of the year.

Costs are based on the length of inscription. The basic entry consists of the date of death, the name of the deceased and a 36 letter inscription. However, there is the option for longer inscriptions up to the maximum 100 letters. This will incur additional costs.

Please refer to both the Memorial Book order form and our fees and charges for these costs.

To order an entry for this book please download the order form. Once completed send it, along with payment, to Hamilton Park Cemetery.

The Garden of Remembrance Granite Wall

The Garden of Remembrance is a new area designed to inter ashes in a garden setting. While the gardens themselves are currently not open for sale, the area's central feature contains the first of several granite walls which cater for the interment of ashes within cylindrical niches. At the time of interment a bronze plaque is permanently secured over the opening.

The bronze plaque is ordered by family directly from a monumental mason and may be supplied with the option of a small flower holder.

    Returned Services Ash Interment

    Ash Interment gardens

The Returned Services ash gardens provide for the interment of ashes of Returned Services personnel and their spouse or partner as a second interment.

The area allows for the memorialisation with an approved Veterans' Affairs plaque only. The plaque can be ordered either through the local Returned Services Association (RSA), a funeral director, or directly with Veteran's Affairs.

RSA Memorial Wall - Memorialisation Only

This Memorial Wall has been provided by the local RSA as a memorialisation only option of Returned Services personnel who have been interred elsewhere.

In such cases a bronze memorial strip, which is ordered from the Hamilton RSA, is placed on the Memorial Wall.

Those service men and women who are interred within the military areas of Hamilton Park Cemetery, and are therefore entitled to a Veterans' Affairs plaque, are not eligible to use this bronze strip memorial option.
