Water is treated at the Hamilton City Council Water Treatment Plant.
A $22 million upgrade of the Water Treatment Plant was completed in early 2007. The city now has a state-of-the-art plant with capacity to meet the city's water demand until 2016.
The water treatment process:
- Screening - coarse grills prevent entry of large debris into the station
- Coagulation and sedimentation - raw water settles in tanks and unwanted materials sink to the bottom
- Filtration - sand filters remove any remaining materials
- Disinfection - chlorine is added to kill any remaining bacteria
- pH Correction - pH is raised to normal levels to protect the pipes and fittings in the distribution network
- Fluoridation - fluoride is added.
The water is then safe for drinking and ready for distribution around the city. |
