For Youth Involvement - F.Y.I.
Hamilton Youth Council hosted a forum FYI (For Youth Involvement) on Friday 24 June 2011 at the Wintec Gallagher Hub.
FYI was sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Development and was one of the events which took place for New Zealand Leadership Week 2011.
Approximately 100 young people from around Hamilton attended the forum. Each young person participated in workshops throughout the day run by Ministry of Youth Development, Waikato Institute for Leisure and Sports Studies and Enderley Computer Clubhouse.
The aim of FYI was to encourage and promote youth leadership within the community and encourage young people to have a voice in the development of their city. The day started off with a presentation from Mareta Ford, HCC Youth Advisor. Ending the day was the 'great debate' with Youth Council members, Logan Reynolds, Lisa Rowe and Adele Rossiter challenging the norm and advocating for young people to be permanently banned from Garden Place, whilst Crs Gordon Chesterman and Margaret Forsyth, along with her Worship the Mayor Julie Hardaker, debated against. The heated debate was well received by those present and gave each panel the opportunity to think outside the square on each of the topics.
Further forum will be planned for 2012. If you have any feedback on the forum, or suggestions for 2012, please email the address below. |
