Access Hamilton

As Hamilton grows, pressure on the city’s transport network continues to increase. Key Access Hamilton roading projects address current traffic congestion and future city growth, involving arterial intersection improvements and completion of the ring road and cross-city connector. This includes changes and extensions to existing roads and intersections, as well as expanding the network through new initiatives.

Hamilton District Plan Review

Fast Forward is the name of Hamilton's District Plan Review and it is perhaps Council's most significant long-term project. The District Plan affects all Hamilton residents and organisations as it sets out the rules and policies for how people can develop and use land in the city.

In the first stage of the District Plan Review, COuncil asked residents what they thought were the significant resource management issues facing the city.

We are now in stage two of the District Plan Review, which is looking at potential solutions to those issues. On August 28 Council distributed a summary flyer to all residents.

The flyer, entitled ‘Snapshot’, takes an easy to read look at how the city hopes to address Hamilton’s most pressing issues, and asks residents their opinion about what Council is thinking so far.

Snapshot covers a range of issues, including what could happen in the areas of facilities and events, natural environments, transport, public space, culture and heritage, design guidance and residential and business areas; and as part of the District Plan review, Council has developed some options that could make sure Hamilton’s growth is smart in those areas.

Snapshot is designed to be a summary of the issues. A new interactive website was launched on 28 August. Residents are encouraged find out more and tell Council what they think by visiting that ( www.fastforwardhamilton.co.nz) or by dropping into their local library for a copy of the full report and discussion document - Big Picture.

The period for public comments closed on 29 October 2010.

City Expansion

Future expansion of Hamilton requires significant planning and coordination to ensure that the necessary land and infrastructure is available to cater for the city's increasing and diverse population needs.

Council has prepared an Urban Growth Strategy to guide the future development of the city and assist the coordination of infrastructure and services. This will contribute to achieving a sustainable pattern of development that meets the changing demographic and economic needs of the city over the next 50 years.  Council is also involved in the preparation of a subregional growth strategy: Future Proof.
