While the long dry summer put pressure on Hamilton’s water supply, City Waters chiefs say they are confident they now have the right plans and gear to deal with a similar event. A barge carrying pumps was installed on the Waikato River near the Hamilton City Council’s Water Treatment Station in mid-April as the river level fell and fears grew it might drop below the plant’s intake level unless rain came. While the rain did come, City Waters staff have been able to fully test and modify the pumping plans.

The country’s cutest red panda trio at Hamilton Zoo have now been named!
The pandas are now known by the Nepalese names of Nima (sun), Karma (star) and Dawa (moon).
The names were chosen by Hamilton Zoo staff and given that there were more than 900 names entered, choosing the winning three was no easy task.

14 MAY 2013: The Peachgrove Rd-Ruakura Rd-Te Aroha St intersection should be open to all traffic by the end of the month.
While work has been under way this month detours have been in place restricting the flow of vehicles through the busy Hamilton East intersection. On reopening the new signals will be operational although work will continue until the expected completion date in July.

8 MAY 2013: A pair of kokako, a rare species of New Zealand bird, are leaving Hamilton Zoo and being released in the wild at Puketi Forest in Northland.
The male (transferred to the zoo in 2005) and female (transferred to the zoo in 2006) birds have been at Hamilton Zoo as part of the Department of Conservation’s Kokako Recovery Programme.
