Get planting during Conservation Week

3 September 2012

Grab a shovel, don your gumboots, and get involved in enhancing and preserving Hamilton’s natural environment during Conservation Week.

Hamilton City Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Unit is working alongside a number of local conservation and environmental groups during Conservation Week - 6 September to 16 September – with several planting and weed removal events planned for various locations around the city.

Community Planting Co-ordinator Gerard Kelly says members of the public can make a difference to the city’s environment by joining one of the planting events.

Planting events scheduled for Hamilton before and during Conservation Week are:

  • Removal of ivy and erosion control work at Humaire Park, off Berkley Ave, from 9.30am on 8 September (15 September if wet).
  • Rat monitoring and control workshop at Jubilee Park, from 10am on 8 September.
  • Opening of a new track at the A. J Seeley Gully Reserve, from 11am on 9 September.
  • Gully restoration and weed removal at the A.J Seeley Gully Reserve, from 9.30am on 10 September.
  • Remnant Kahikatea forest restoration and weed removal at Jubilee Park, from 10.30am on 10 September.
  • Kowhai Festival planting in Hayes Paddock, from 9.30am on 11 September.
  • Ongoing restoration work at Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, from 11am on 16 September.
  • Weedbusters Group launch at Miropiko Reserve, from 1.30pm on 16 September.
“A little effort goes a long way, and because we have events spread across the city, there are opportunities for everyone to do their bit and help beautify our city,” Mr Kelly says.
