Hukanui Rd Closure

Update #4 - Friday 8 March 9am

The Wairere Dr/Hukanui Rd roundabout and Hukanui Road re-opened at 6.30pm last night. Motorists are asked to take it slowly through this roundabout which has been repaired with temporary seal while the earth resettles after the recent burst water main. Another layer of temporary seal will be laid at 3am tomorrow when diversions will be in place for about an hour. It is expected that permanent repairs will take place in about a month.

Update #3 - Thursday 7 March 5pm

The Hukanui Rd/Wairere Dr intersection will be fully operational from 6.30pm tonight and Hukanui Rd fully open from then too.

Temporary seal has been used and will need to be replaced at a later stage but all should be well for rush hour tomorrow morning.  Both underpasses are now open. Thank you for your patience while the repairs have been carried out.

Update #2 - Thursday 7 March 10am

Work is continuing today to repair the Hukanui Rd/Wairere Dr intersection and motorists are advised to find alternative routes if possible.

Council staff will remove the road seal first to determine the extent of damage underneath. The best case scenario for reopening the northbound lane of Hukanui Rd between Thomas Rd and Wairere Dr is tonight – but not in time for peak hour traffic. If damage is extensive, it may take until lunchtime tomorrow to reopen all lanes.

Motorists can use River Rd, Resolution Dr or Gordonton Rd to bypass the area.

Work is also taking place this morning to clear the blocked underpass.

Update #1 - Wednesday 6 March

Motorists are advised that Hukanui Rd between Thomas Rd and Wairere Dr is closed for northbound traffic until further notice due to a burst water main.

Detours are available along Gordonton Rd or Resolution Dr but people are asked to avoid the area if possible.

The road has been extensively damaged and is likely to take up to two days to repair.

As well as the Hukanui Rd closure the following restrictions are also in place:
  • Northbound traffic approaching the Hukanui Rd/Wairere Dr roundabout must turn left into Wairere Dr
  • Eastbound traffic along Wairere Dr (from the river) must turn left into Resolution Dr
All underpasses remain open for pedestrians but people will need to take care when using them due to mud and water. Council staff will be cleaning them out.

Three properties on Hukanui Rd are without water and Council staff are liaising with the occupants to arrange an alternative supply.

However, residents in the north of Hamilton may notice lower water pressure this evening and are asked to conserve water where possible.
