Submissions for Hamilton City Council 2012 Representation Review
We are currently reviewing the way our community is represented within Council. As part of the Representation Review we asked Hamilton residents to tell us what they think of the proposed changes by making a submission to Council (submissions are now closed).
At its meeting on July 5, Hamilton City Council voted 6-5 in favour of a proposal which, if adopted, would see a change to the city’s representation.

The Representation Review proposal included:
- removal of the city’s East and West electoral wards
- a reduction in the number of Councillors from 12 to 10 Councillors, plus the Mayor
- Election of Councillors ‘at large’ (city-wide), in the same way the city elects the Mayor

All councils are required to review how their communities are represented every six years in accordance to the Local Electoral Act 2001. It assists Council to decide how many Elected Members (Mayor and Councillors) the city should have and how they will represent the community for the October 2013 elections. Council sought feedback from the public as part of the review process in May. You can view the feedback received on the Getinvolved online forum.
Note: The Remuneration Authority, which allocates funds for payment of elected members in local government, has determined the remuneration pool for Hamilton City Council will remain the same, regardless of the number of Councillors.
Making a submission (now closed)
The online and written submissions have now been received and will be collated by our Democratic Services team who will contact those wishing to speak about their submission at a Council hearing. The hearing dates are yet to be confirmed.
The public submission period closed on Monday, 13 August at midnight. By the end of August, Council must make public a final proposal, with a Council decision on the future electoral structure to be made by 27 September.
