Council petitions Ministry of Transport

Posted On: Tuesday, 31 January 2006

School's back in on Tuesday [7 February] and Council's road safety initiatives continue to promote increased road safety around schools.

Hamilton's Walking School Bus programme is gaining momentum with six primary schools involved and another three joining in the first term of this year.

Council has also submitted an application to the Ministry of Transport that a speed limit of 40km per hour be set around suitable schools in Hamilton.

Hamilton city councillor and chair of the Speeding Subcommittee John Gower says the submission aims to improve road safety around schools and build on existing initiatives to achieve this.

"School returning on Tuesday presents a strong reminder of the importance of road safety around these areas where children make their way to school and gather prior to going into class.

"Already a number of initiatives such as the Walking School Bus programme and the Back to School advertising drive are highlighting the breadth of Council's road safety initiatives that relate to schools. Council's application to the Ministry of Transport is a further extension of these initiatives.

"If the Ministry of Transport approves the application, Council intends to recommend a bylaw that lowers the speed limit around selected Hamilton schools to 40km per hour."
