Those who volunteered their time and trade skills in response to the Asian tsunami disaster were thanked by Hamilton mayor Michael Redman at a civic reception yesterday [29 March 2005]. Over 15 volunteers spent five weeks in the Sri Lankan village of Seenigama where they rebuilt approximately 53 houses that had been devastated by the Asian tsunami. Hamilton City Council has been fined for two breaches of its resource consent at the Horotiu Landfill following a prosecution by Environment Waikato.The two offences relate to a lack of adequate cover on the active tip-face in September/October 2003, and to uncovered refuse disposed at the landfill in January 2004.
